To see which ad generated a lead, keep the ad, campaign and form name on each lead record from the moment it arrives, then count later stages such as Qualified and Won per ad. Ads Manager tells you how many leads each ad got, but only your lead records tell you which ad brought the leads that bought.

## Where the ad name lives

| Place | Shows | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Ads Manager | Lead count and cost per lead per ad | Spotting cheap leads |
| Leads Center | Each lead in Meta | Working through leads |
| Your CRM or lead tool | Each lead, if the connection passes the ad and campaign | Tracking a lead to a sale |
| A Slack lead message | Form, ad and campaign, if your tool includes them | Callers seeing the source at a glance |

The trap is the gap between the first row and the third. Ads Manager knows the ad but not the sale. Your sales team knows the sale but often not the ad.

## Step by step

1. **Name ads so people can read them.** "Goa reel 02, beach hook" beats "Ad 3 copy". Callers will see these names.
2. **Make sure each lead carries its source.** When you connect Meta to your CRM or lead tool, check that the ad name, campaign name and form name come through. Send a real lead from a small live ad to check, because Meta's test leads are not tied to any ad.
3. **Use clear stages.** New, Contacted, Qualified, Won, Lost. See [Meta Conversions API](/glossary/conversions-api) for sending them back to Meta.
4. **Count per ad each week.** Leads, qualified leads and wins for each ad.
5. **Judge by cost per qualified lead.** Not cost per lead.

## Worked example

Say Northwind Escapes runs two ads for a Goa offer in one month.

| | Ad A: Goa beach reel | Ad B: Goa villa carousel |
|---|---|---|
| Spend | INR 36,000 | INR 30,000 |
| Leads | 120 | 60 |
| Cost per lead | INR 300 | INR 500 |
| Qualified | 12 | 18 |
| Cost per qualified lead | INR 3,000 | INR 1,667 |

Step by step for Ad A: INR 36,000 / 120 leads = INR 300 a lead. INR 36,000 / 12 qualified = INR 3,000 a qualified lead.

For Ad B: INR 30,000 / 60 = INR 500 a lead. INR 30,000 / 18 = INR 1,667 a qualified lead.

By Ads Manager alone, Ad A looks better. By qualified leads, Ad B costs about 44% less per qualified lead. You can only see that if each lead keeps its ad name.

## Why it changes your creative decisions

Once you know which ads bring qualified leads, you can ask why. Perhaps the villa carousel shows a price, so people who fill the form already accept it. Tag each ad by hook, angle, format and offer, and patterns show up over a few months. See [how to tag creatives for analysis](/guides/how-to-tag-creatives-for-analysis) and [what a hook is](/glossary/ad-hook).

We make Marxx. Its lead message in Slack shows the client, form, ad and campaign for each Meta lead, with **Open lead in Marxx** for the rest. See the [Leads feature](/features/leads).

## Common mistakes

- **One form shared by every ad, with vague ad names.** You get leads, but no one can tell the ads apart.
- **Duplicating ads without renaming them.** "Copy of Copy of Ad 1" in a lead record helps no one.
- **Judging after three days.** Qualification takes time. Give each ad a few weeks of leads first.

## FAQ

### Does Facebook tell me which ad each lead came from?

Ads Manager shows lead counts per ad. To see the ad on each individual lead, check that your CRM or lead tool brings the ad name in with the lead.

### Why do test leads show no ad?

Meta says leads made with its Lead Ads Testing Tool are not tied to any ad. Test with a small live ad when you need to check the ad field.

### Should I use a different form for each ad?

Not needed if each lead carries its ad name. Separate forms help when you route leads to different teams.
