To turn a competitor's ad into a test, pick out the angle (the reason it gives people to buy), not the asset (the video or image). Then write your own ad on that angle, brief it, and test it against your current best ad with a fixed budget and end date.

## Angle, not asset

The asset is what you see: footage, music, words, layout. The angle is the idea underneath, such as "cheaper than you think" or "safe for families". You can borrow an angle. You cannot borrow the asset. Read [what an ad angle is](/glossary/ad-angle) if the term is new.

| Part of the ad | Take it? | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Angle | Yes, in your words | Ideas are common ground in advertising |
| Hook type (question, number, mistake) | Yes | A structure, not someone's work |
| Format (reel, carousel, static) | Yes | Every brand uses them |
| Footage, music, exact lines | No | Their work, and their brand |
| Offer | Only if you can match it | Do not promise what you cannot sell |

## The five steps

1. **Pick the ad.** Choose one that teaches something you have not tried. In a public ad library you can see when it started and whether it is still live. You cannot see spend or results, so "has run 40 days" is a clue, not proof.
2. **Name the angle in one sentence.** "Off-season travel is cheaper and quieter."
3. **Write your hypothesis.** "If we lead with off-season price, cost per lead falls compared to our current best." The [ad testing hypothesis template](/templates/ad-testing-hypothesis-template) gives the full shape.
4. **Brief your version.** Your product, your footage, your offer. List what to take (the angle, the hook type) and what never to take (their lines, their visuals).
5. **Test it fairly.** Run it against your current best ad, same audience, same budget, fixed dates. Decide the winning number before you start.

## Worked example

Say a fictional rival, Wanderlast Holidays, has a reel live in the Meta Ad Library since 20 September. It opens: "Goa in monsoon costs less than you think." You run ads for Northwind Escapes.

- **Angle:** monsoon travel is cheaper.
- **Your version:** a reel of Northwind's own Goa villa in the rain, opening on "Monsoon Goa, 3 nights from INR 7,200".
- **Test:** your new reel against your current best reel, INR 2,500 a day each for 7 days. That is INR 17,500 per ad, INR 35,000 in total.
- **Result:** the new reel gets 52 leads, cost per lead INR 337. The current best gets 44 leads, cost per lead INR 398.
- **Decision:** INR 337 is 15% lower than INR 398, so the monsoon angle goes into next month's plan, with two more versions.

If the numbers had come out the other way, the lesson still counts: the angle did not suit your buyers, and you spent INR 17,500 to learn it. Set test budgets with [how to build a creative testing budget](/guides/how-to-build-a-creative-testing-budget).

## Common mistakes

- **Remaking the ad shot for shot.** You get their idea, a weaker version of it, and a brand that looks like theirs.
- **Testing three changes at once.** New angle, new format and new offer together tell you nothing about which mattered.
- **No end date.** Tests without one drift for weeks.

Marxx posts competitors' new ads in a client's Slack channel, with a **Save** button on each, so the ad you start from is one click from the client's board. We make Marxx. See [competitor tracking](/features/competitor-tracking).

## FAQ

### Is it fair to borrow a competitor's angle?

Most teams treat angles and hook types as shared ideas, and never reuse another brand's footage, music or exact wording. If a specific ad worries you, ask a lawyer.

### How long should the test run?

Run it until each ad has enough results to compare, often 7 to 14 days. Fix the end date before you start.

### What if the competitor stops running the ad?

That tells you little. Brands stop ads for many reasons, such as a sale ending. Judge the angle on your own test.
