To find wasted ad spend with AI, connect a tool that reads your ad account and ask it where money went with no result: ads with spend and no leads, tired ads with rising cost, and search terms that do not match your offer. Then check each item by hand before you pause anything.

## What counts as waste

Waste is spend that did not get a result and is unlikely to. It is not every expensive ad. A INR 900 lead can be fine if those leads close. Agree your target cost per result first, then look for spend far above it.

Wasted share = spend with no result / total spend

## Six questions to ask

Ask these in your AI tool, with the client and the time window named.

1. "Which ads spent more than INR 3,000 in the last 14 days with zero leads?"
2. "Which ad sets have a cost per lead more than double our INR 400 target over the last 7 days?"
3. "Which ads show fatigue: frequency rising and CTR falling over 14 days?"
4. "List Google Ads search terms with spend and no conversions this month."
5. "Which campaigns spent on weekends with no results?"
6. "Which ads are still live with spend under INR 500 a week and no results for 30 days?"

Learn the terms first if you need them: [frequency](/glossary/frequency) is how many times the same person saw your ad on average, and [ad fatigue](/glossary/ad-fatigue) is when results fall because people have seen an ad too often.

## A worked example

Say Wanderlast Holidays, a made-up tour company, spent INR 1,20,000 on Meta and Google Ads last month. The AI's answers list:

| Item | Spend | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Ad "Goa static 03", 14 days | INR 7,800 | 0 leads |
| Search term "goa jobs" | INR 3,100 | 0 conversions |
| Search term "free goa trip" | INR 6,400 | 0 conversions |
| Ad set "Broad 35+", cost per lead | INR 1,050 vs INR 400 target | 9 leads |

Step 1. Add the spend with no result: INR 7,800 + INR 3,100 + INR 6,400 = INR 17,300.

Step 2. Work out the share: INR 17,300 / INR 1,20,000 = 14.4%.

Step 3. Check each item by hand. "Goa static 03" launched 14 days ago, so it had time. The two search terms do not match the offer. Those are clear cuts.

Step 4. Treat "Broad 35+" differently. It has leads, just expensive ones. Check whether those 9 leads became bookings before you cut it.

## What to check before you cut

- **Tracking works.** Zero results can mean a broken pixel or conversion tag, not a bad ad.
- **The ad had time.** A 2-day-old ad has not had a fair run.
- **The money moves somewhere useful.** Pausing saves spend only if the budget goes to something that works.
- **A person signs off.** The AI lists. You decide.

## FAQ

### Can the AI pause wasted ads for me?

Some tools can, with permission. It is safer to have the AI list items and a person approve each pause.

### How often should I look for waste?

Weekly suits most accounts. Daily makes sense during a big sale, when money moves fast.

### Is a high cost per lead always waste?

No. Check lead quality first. Expensive leads that close can be worth more than cheap ones that never answer the phone.
