The Lead Ads Testing Tool is a page on Meta for Developers that creates a test lead on one of your lead forms and shows whether it reached your CRM or webhook. Open it at [developers.facebook.com/tools/lead-ads-testing](https://developers.facebook.com/tools/lead-ads-testing) while logged in to Facebook, pick your Page and form, click **Create Lead**, then click **Track Status**. Every fact below comes from Meta's lead ads documentation, starting with its [testing and troubleshooting guide](https://developers.facebook.com/documentation/ads-commerce/marketing-api/guides/lead-ads/testing-troubleshooting), and from Meta's Business Help Center, checked on 2 November 2026.

## What the tool does

- **Creates and deletes test leads** for your lead forms. By default the lead holds dummy data.
- **Fires the same update a real lead would**, so you can see whether your CRM or webhook picks it up.
- **Shows whether Meta sent it.** Track Status reads "pending" at first, then "success" or "failed".
- **Keeps test leads away from your ads.** Meta says leads made with the tool are "organic leads that are not associated with any ad".

## Before you start

- **Page access.** The Page drop-down lists only the Pages you have advertiser access to. If your Page is missing, ask someone who manages the Page to give you advertiser access.
- **A form on the Page.** The tool tests forms that already exist. Build the form in Ads Manager or Meta Business Suite first.
- **A live connection.** Meta says you cannot use the tool in developer mode. Connect your CRM or webhook app properly before you test.
- **No test lead already on the form.** You can create one test lead per form. Delete the old one before you make another.

## Step by step

1. Open the [Lead Ads Testing Tool](https://developers.facebook.com/tools/lead-ads-testing) while signed in to Facebook.
2. Choose your Page from the Page drop-down.
3. Choose the form from the Form drop-down.
4. Click **Create Lead** to send a lead filled with dummy data. To use your own answers instead, such as an email address you can check, click **Preview Form** and enter them there.
5. Once the lead exists, a **Track Status** button appears. Click it, and click again until the status stops saying "pending". It takes a few seconds.
6. To test again, click **Delete Lead**, then create a new one.

## Reading Track Status

| Status | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Pending | Meta has not finished sending the lead yet | Wait a few seconds and click again |
| Success | Meta sent the update to your endpoint, and shows a copy of what it sent | Check the record in your CRM matches the copy |
| Failed | The lead did not arrive | Read the error code column, then use the fixes below |

A success only shows that Meta sent the lead. Check your CRM or server logs to confirm it arrived, and that each answer landed in the right field, especially custom questions and phone numbers.

## When the test lead does not reach your CRM

- **The CRM has no leads access.** Meta's help says a CRM without leads access gets no real-time updates, and the testing tool shows an error for it. [Meta's help page](https://www.facebook.com/business/help/618808448980683) explains how to turn on leads access, and a linked page covers adding a CRM to it.
- **The app is not installed on the Page.** Webhooks only fire if the Page has installed the app and has not switched off the "App" platform in its settings ([Meta's webhooks guide](https://developers.facebook.com/documentation/ads-commerce/marketing-api/guides/lead-ads/quickstart/webhooks-integration)).
- **Missing permissions.** If you built the integration yourself, the app needs `leads_retrieval`, `pages_manage_metadata`, `pages_show_list`, `pages_read_engagement` and `ads_management`, per the same guide. Reading leads also needs App Review.
- **The app is still in development mode.** Meta says an app in development mode can only retrieve leads from people who have a role on the app.
- **It is just slow.** Meta says real-time updates can take up to a few minutes. Wait before you rebuild anything.

## Other ways to test a lead form

- **The Graph API.** Send a POST to `/{FORM_ID}/test_leads` with a Page access token. You need the Advertiser role or above on the Page, and the form must have no existing test lead. Only the owner of a lead can delete it.
- **The Webhooks dashboard.** Once Webhooks is set up for your app, its **Test** button sends a sample event.
- **The ad preview.** If you create the ad from your Facebook Page, the arrows at the bottom of the ad preview let you review the form. This checks the wording and order, not delivery.

Once leads flow, the next job is judging them. See [lead ads vs a landing page](/compare/lead-ads-vs-landing-page) for when a form is the right choice, and [lead ad headline examples](/templates/lead-ad-headline-examples) for the ad itself. We make Marxx, which [captures Meta lead ads by webhook](/features/leads), adds the ad that produced each lead, and writes later lead stages back to Meta as conversion events.

## FAQ

### Does the Lead Ads Testing Tool cost anything?

Meta lists no fee for it. You need a Facebook login and advertiser access to the Page.

### Are test leads charged?

Leads made with the tool are not tied to any ad, per Meta's guide. Meta's help says you only pay for leads submitted as a direct result of an ad being shown ([Meta's help](https://www.facebook.com/business/help/1131888990173231)). Meta does not say more about tool leads.

### Why can't I see my Page in the drop-down?

The list only shows Pages you have advertiser access to. Ask someone who manages the Page for advertiser access, then reload the tool.

### Why can't I create another test lead?

Each form can hold one test lead at a time. Click **Delete Lead**, then create a new one.

### Why does the tool say "failed"?

The lead did not reach your endpoint. Check the error code, then check CRM leads access, that the app is installed on the Page, and that the app is not in development mode.
