Facebook ads in Japan run in Meta Ads Manager, and Meta's tax page has no entry for Japan, so ask your accountant what applies to your bill. You can pay with Amex, JCB, Mastercard or Visa cards, or PayPal.

## Facts that differ in Japan (checked 2026-10-20)

| Fact | Japan |
|---|---|
| Ad transparency | The [Meta Ad Library](/glossary/meta-ad-library) shows every active ad. Japan is on Meta's list of countries where ads about elections or politics need authorisation and a disclaimer ([Meta](https://www.facebook.com/business/help/2150157295276323)). |
| Tax on Meta's bill | Meta's tax page does not list Japan. It says information is not available for countries it does not list, and that Meta cannot give tax advice ([Meta: taxes by country](https://www.facebook.com/business/help/133076073434794)). |
| Main languages | Japanese. The Court Act says Japanese is used in court ([Court Act, Article 74](https://www.japaneselawtranslation.go.jp/en/laws/view/3225/en)). |
| Popular platforms | Ad reach in late 2025: YouTube 78.5 million, X 71.2 million, Instagram 63.2 million, TikTok 39.2 million (adults only), Facebook 16.5 million. LINE reported 99.0 million monthly active users ([DataReportal](https://datareportal.com/reports/digital-2026-japan)). Ad reach is the audience each platform's ad tool reports, not active users. |
| Payments Meta accepts | Amex, JCB, Mastercard and Visa cards, and PayPal. Meta also lists a manual PayPal method that needs Japan as the account country and yen as the currency, chosen when you first set up the ad account ([Meta](https://www.facebook.com/business/help/502324833442790)). |
| Time zone | UTC+9 all year, no daylight saving ([IANA tz database 2026e](https://www.iana.org/time-zones)). |

## The hidden-ad rule

Since 1 October 2023, an ad that ordinary consumers cannot recognise as an ad breaks Japan's Act against Unjustifiable Premiums and Misleading Representations. The Consumer Affairs Agency says this covers posts and reviews on social media, and that the rule regulates the business that supplies the product, not the influencer it hires ([Consumer Affairs Agency, in Japanese](https://www.caa.go.jp/policies/policy/representation/fair_labeling/stealth_marketing/)). If you work with creators, label the post clearly. See [partnership ads](/glossary/partnership-ads).

## Key selling dates (checked 2026-10-20)

- **Black Friday:** Friday 27 November 2026 ([plan](/campaigns/black-friday-ad-ideas)).
- **Labor Thanksgiving Day:** Monday 23 November 2026, and Culture Day on Tuesday 3 November ([Cabinet Office](https://www8.cao.go.jp/chosei/shukujitsu/gaiyou.html)).
- **New Year's Day:** Friday 1 January 2027, and Coming of Age Day on Monday 11 January, on the same list. See [New Year ideas](/campaigns/new-year-ad-ideas).
- **Golden Week 2027:** holidays on Thursday 29 April, then Monday 3, Tuesday 4 and Wednesday 5 May, on the same list.

## What to run and when

Say you plan JPY 3,000,000 for Golden Week. You put JPY 600,000 into the two weeks before 29 April to test hooks and offers, JPY 1,800,000 into the holiday run behind the winners, and JPY 600,000 into the days after. Instagram reaches 63.2 million people against Facebook's 16.5 million, almost four times as many, so test it first.

Looking at nearby markets? Compare [Singapore](/markets/meta-ads-in-singapore), which has an entry on Meta's tax page, unlike Japan.

To see what rival brands run before you spend, search the Ad Library by hand. We make Marxx, which [tracks competitor ads](/features/competitor-tracking) on Meta and Google in one place.

## Common mistakes

- Assuming Meta charges no tax because its tax page is silent. Ask your accountant.
- Running creator posts without a clear ad label.
- Planning around Facebook alone. Its ad reach is the smallest of the five platforms listed.
- Running ads about elections or politics without authorisation.
