From **4 December 2026**, every new Performance Max campaign in Google Ads will take images from your landing pages and use them in ads by default. This holds even if you switched "Dynamic images" off for your whole account. Campaigns you already run keep their current setting.

## What we know

- Google announced it on the [Google Ads Developer Blog](http://ads-developers.googleblog.com/2026/10/upcoming-changes-to-image-extraction-in.html) on 21 October 2026. This is confirmed by Google.
- The default covers the Google Ads website, Google Ads Editor and the Google Ads API.
- Google's AI scans your landing pages for high-resolution images. It can show them on Search, YouTube, Display, Discover, Gmail and Maps.
- Until now, a new campaign with no setting copied the account-level "Dynamic images" switch. From 4 December, it no longer does.

| | Before 4 December | From 4 December |
|---|---|---|
| New PMax campaign, no setting | Follows the account switch | Image extraction on |
| Existing PMax campaign | Unchanged | Unchanged |
| Turn it off | Account switch | Opt out on each new campaign |

## What it means for your ad account

- Product shots, banners or old sale graphics on your site may appear as ads you did not upload.
- Google asks you to confirm you own the rights to every image on your landing pages. Stock photos and creator content licensed only for your site are the risk.
- More images can help [creative diversity](/glossary/creative-diversity), but you lose some say over what runs.

## What to do this week

1. **Check the account switch.** In Google Ads, open Campaigns, then Assets, then the three-dot menu, Account-level automated assets, Advanced settings, and look at "Dynamic images".
2. **Audit your landing pages.** Remove images you do not have ad rights to, and old offers.
3. **Tell whoever builds campaigns.** If you use scripts, an agency or a tool, they must set the opt-out on each new campaign from 4 December.
4. **Check results after launch.** Look at which images run, then compare with how your ads differ on [Meta and Google](/compare/meta-ads-vs-google-ads). You can see what rivals run in the [Google Ads Transparency Center](/guides/how-to-use-google-ads-transparency-center).

## FAQ

### Does this change my running Performance Max campaigns?

No. Google says existing campaigns keep their current configuration. Only campaigns created from 4 December 2026 get the new default.

### Can I still turn image extraction off?

Yes. You opt out on each new campaign. The account-level switch alone no longer stops it for new campaigns.
