Use this checklist each time you add a client to your agency's Slack. It covers the channels, who is in them, which tools post where, a test for each tool and the welcome note, so nothing lands in the wrong room on day one.

## The checklist

1. CHANNELS
[ ] client-[name] created, private
[ ] client-[name]-leads created (if the client runs lead forms)
[ ] client-[name]-alerts created (if you run ad alerts)
[ ] ext-[name] created (only if the client will use Slack)

2. PEOPLE
[ ] Account team added to client- channels
[ ] Owner and backup written in every channel description
[ ] Client invited to ext- only (Slack Connect or guest)
[ ] No client and no outsider in any client- channel

[ ] Alerts tool posts to client-[name]-alerts

[ ] Each bot added to the channels it posts in
[ ] Lead contact details: shown or hidden? Decided: [ ]

4. TESTS

## A filled-in example

Say you sign Orbit Fitness on Monday. It runs Meta lead forms, gets about 5 leads a week and its owner does not use Slack.

| Step | What you did |
|---|---|
| Channels | client-orbit only. Leads and alerts go there too, since volume is low |
| People | Priya Shah (owner), Karan Mehta (backup) |
| Client room | No ext- channel. The owner prefers WhatsApp |
| Tools | Lead tool and alerts tool both post to client-orbit |
| Tests | Test lead arrived in 1 minute. Test alert arrived |

Total: 1 channel, 2 tools, 2 tests, done in 30 minutes. A bigger client like Northwind Escapes would get all four channels, as in our [naming conventions template](/templates/slack-channel-naming-conventions-for-agencies).

## Tips

- **Run the tests every time.** A tool pointed at last client's channel is the most common setup mistake.
- **Check plan limits before adding bots.** Slack's free plan allows up to 10 apps for the whole workspace (checked 6 Nov 2026). See [Slack pricing in India](/prices/slack-pricing).
- **Decide on lead contact details up front.** Everyone in a channel sees what is posted there.
- **Keep this checklist next to your main onboarding list.** The [client onboarding checklist for agencies](/templates/client-onboarding-checklist-for-agencies) covers access, tracking and goals.

For Meta lead forms, Meta's testing tool creates the test lead. See [how to use the Facebook Lead Ads Testing Tool](/guides/how-to-use-the-facebook-lead-ads-testing-tool).

We make Marxx. In [Marxx in Slack](/features/slack), the first time a teammate clicks a Marxx button, Slack asks them once to link their Slack account. Do that during the tests.

## FAQ

### How long does client Slack setup take?

About 30 minutes for a small client and 90 minutes for a large one with four channels and several tools.

### Who should own this checklist?

The account lead for the client. They tick it off and pin the finished copy in the client- channel.

### Do I need the ext- channel for every client?

No. Create it only when the client wants to talk in Slack.
