A weekly sector trends brief is a one-screen note that lists the two or three patterns showing up across ads in your sector this week, and gives each one a decision: test it, watch it or skip it. It turns "everyone is doing reels with prices" into a dated choice someone owns.

Use it when you run ads in a crowded sector, such as travel, skincare or food delivery, where many brands change their ads every week. It works for one brand or for an agency writing one brief per client. Write it on the same day each week, after you have looked at your sources.

## The template

```
SECTOR TRENDS BRIEF: [sector], week of [date]
Client: [name]   Written by: [name]   Sources: [where you looked]
TREND 1: [pattern in one line]
  Seen in: [n] advertisers, e.g. [brand], [brand]
  Since: [first date you saw it]
  Fits our brand? [yes / no / partly], because [reason]
  Decision: [TEST / WATCH / SKIP]
  If TEST: our version = [one line]   Budget: [INR ]   Ends: [date]
TREND 2: [ ]
  Seen in:
  Since:
  Fits our brand?
  Decision:
FADING: [a trend from earlier weeks that fewer brands now run]
ASK FOR THE CLIENT: [one yes/no question, or "none"]
```

## A filled-in example

All brands, people and figures below are made up.

```
SECTOR TRENDS BRIEF: Travel, week of 3 Nov 2026
Client: Northwind Escapes   Written by: Priya Shah
Sources: weekly trends message, Meta Ad Library keyword search
TREND 1: Reels open on a nightly price, not a package price
  Seen in: 5 advertisers, e.g. Wanderlast Holidays, Bluepine Travel
  Since: 20 Oct
  Fits our brand? Yes, our Goa villas are priced per night
  Decision: TEST
  If TEST: "Goa, INR 2,400 a night" in frame one
  Budget: INR 2,000 a day for 7 days = INR 14,000   Ends: 13 Nov
TREND 2: Carousels of "what is included" with one item per card
  Seen in: 3 advertisers
  Since: 27 Oct
  Fits our brand? Partly, we include breakfast but not transfers
  Decision: WATCH
FADING: "Plan your Diwali trip" countdown statics
ASK FOR THE CLIENT: Can we show a per-night price in ads? yes/no
```

## How to fill it in

1. **Look at many brands, not one.** A pattern needs at least three advertisers. Two is a coincidence.
2. **Write the pattern without brand names.** "Price in frame one" travels. "Wanderlast's reel" does not.
3. **Decide, every time.** TEST needs a budget and an end date. WATCH means check again next week. SKIP needs a reason.
4. **Keep one ask for the client.** A yes/no question gets an answer in Slack the same day.

Marxx can post a **Weekly sector trends** message in each client's Slack channel, so the first source arrives on its own each week. We make Marxx. See the [Marxx in Slack page](/features/slack).

## Tips

- **Stick to what you can see.** Count advertisers and dates from a public ad library. Do not write that a trend "is working". No public library shows results.
- **Two trends is plenty.** A brief with seven trends gets no decisions.
- **Keep old briefs.** Reading four weeks back shows which trends lasted.

## FAQ

### Who should write the sector trends brief?

The strategist or account lead for the client. It takes 15 to 20 minutes once the sources are open.

### How is this different from a competitor review?

A competitor review looks at named rivals' new ads. A trends brief looks across the whole sector for patterns, including brands you do not track.

### What if nothing new is trending?

Write "No new trends" and fill the FADING line. Knowing a pattern has faded is also useful.
